Ask Lavette: Dry Natural Hair

Ask Lavette: I recently cut my hair and went natural, but now my hair feels so dry…….What can I do?

This is a common question. When we wear our hair relaxed for so long then switch to natural, the hair feels different and we think the hair is dry and unhealthy. We have to understand our curl pattern get used to the texture change and how it will feel. The more curly your hair, the more dry the ends can be depending on the thickness of the hair. The natural oils from the scalp don’t reach the ends when the hair is extra curly. It is best to shampoo with moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. It is also essential to use a leave-in conditioner and a moisturizing cream. Using moisturizing creams is better than using heavy greases.  A cream will penetrate the shaft leaving the hair soft while a grease will only lye on the surface.  Greases also tend to collect lint and dust. Try using all of these steps then follow up with twisting your hair and sitting under a hooded dryer. Using a hooded dryer locks in moisture along with using a setting moisturizing cream and securing your hair at night with a satin head wrap. Just to summarize:

1) Wash and condition with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner

2) Use a leave-in conditioner and  moisturizing setting cream

3) Use a wide tooth comb to untangle

4) Twist in medium sized sections

5) Sit under a hooded dryer

6) Release and style in desired style
